Art's value moves beyond aesthetics. It can be used as a tool to create change in society or improve emotional and cultural intellectual health. In this panel, we will see how two New York-based artists have dealt with stereotypical mindsets and have subverted an image or reversed a gaze through their work and personalities.

Visual Artist
A Brooklyn-based first-generation South Asian Indian American artist whose visual artwork is influenced by sustainable architecture and principles of nature, physics, and biology. One will find an aesthetic of amoebic flowing organic shaped forms organized in fractal or biological patterns juxtaposed with architectural structural forms permeating throughout most of her work. Ms. Pandya explores the boundary between the build world and the natural world often using sustainable and reclaimed materials discarded from the build world. Performance Artist
Sloka Iyengar PhD is a neuroscientist and practitioner of Bharatanatyam, passionate about relieving suffering through the sciences and the arts. Her dance practice manifests in three main ways: 1. Continuing to learn Bharatanatyam, music, and Sanskrit from her gurus; 2. Creating works that articulate the convergence between the sciences and the arts; and 3. Creating the foundation to use Bharatanatyam for creative aging. You can find more about her at http://www.slokaiyengar.net/.
